Charter Amendment for Non-Partisan Offices

At the March 30, 2006 Pierce County Charter Review Commission meeting, the Commission gave a first round approval to a proposed amendment to make all county level officials non-partisan except the County Council and Executive. The proposal will have to receive a second approval in June to make the November ballot before the voters.

Under this proposal, the Auditor, the Assessor-Treasurer, the Prosecuting Attorney and the Sheriff, if elected, would be non-partisan positions.

My preference is to have all elected offices be partisan for two reasons: 1) It gives some idea of what an individual stands for and 2) it gives a two level check, one at the party level and one at the election.

The two party system has taken away our right to vote for the candidate of our choice. If the political parties are so great at selecting Candidates how come so many of them, both Republican and Democrat, end up behind bars for felony convicts.

The current Montana primary systems purpose is to prevent cross voting or stacking the deck by the political parties. Taking away partisan politics does not prevent a candidate from stating his or her preference. The problem is the political parties are afraid they will lose their strangle hold on the political process and independent candidates will prevail.

At the present time if you vote for an independent candidate in the primary election you lose your right to vote for other candidates. Thus the Republican and Democratic parties have effectively stopped any independent from running for office in this state and in Pierce County.

The citizen’s right to choose the candidate of his or her choosing has be taken away by the political bosses from both parties.

I don't have a problem with the multiple party systems; I do have a problem being told I must choose a political party and vote within that party only.

Didn't Russia require the people to announce they were communists before they could vote for the person they were told to vote for by the political bosses!!!!
